Farron presses Brown to reverse post offices decision

May 15, 2007 12:00 AM

Local MP, Tim Farron has today written to the man expected by most to be Britain's next Prime Minister, Gordon Brown urging him to reconsider the government's position on proposed post office closures. This comes ahead of an announcement from the Department for Trade and Industry expected this Thursday on the post offices consultation.

Tim asked the Chancellor, soon to be Prime Minister if he would truly be making a break from the Blair era by reversing the decision to close thousands of local post offices up and down the country.

Mr Farron said:

"It's been said countless times before, but the post office really is the heart of so many communities, it offers so much more than just the traditional services. Gordon Brown ought to take this opportunity to draw a line under the Blair era and start a fresh.

"The existing policy of post office closures is extremely unpopular with the public, this much is obvious from the sheer numbers who have signed petitions up and down the country. If Gordon Brown wants a boost in his poll ratings, this would be a great way to start!"

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
