Farron calls on Hutton to keep job centre open

June 13, 2007 12:00 AM

JobCentrePlus logoLocal MP, Tim Farron has today written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and neighbouring MP John Hutton to demand that the Job Centre in Ulverston is kept open. The Job Centre is seen by local people as a vital resource in what is a very rural area.

Mr Farron has been contacted by several local people, including Lower Holker Parish Council who has asked him to intervene to prevent the closure.

Tim Farron said:

"Ulverston Job Centre staff perform a vital role giving expert advice and help to people seeking advice and work. Closure of the Job Centre will isolate people from the support that they desperately need. It is outrageous that the government should force job seekers to undertake very expensive longer journeys to Barrow or Kendal.

"I have written to Mr Hutton in the hope that he will intervene and reverse this decision, it would be nice to see a member of the government take into account the views of local people."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
