Time to improve road safety at Foxfield level crossing says local MP

July 18, 2007 12:00 AM

Tim Farron MP is campaigning to improve the safety of the A595 at the level crossing by Foxfield near Broughton-in-Furness. This stretch of road is one of the most dangerous in the local area having seen 14 accidents in the last 3 years, with 3 serious accidents requiring an Air Ambulance in the last 9 months alone.

Problems arise as the gates of the level crossing stay closed until a driver requests to pass through, at which point the gates can take some time to open. There is only enough space for two cars to wait and any other cars wishing to use the crossing have to wait on the A595 dangerously obstructing traffic.

Tim has written to Cumbria County Council to request a 30mph speed limit for this stretch of the A595 and also to Network Rail to call for the current barrier to be upgraded to an automatic barrier.

Tim Farron says:

"It's time that something was done to improve the safety of this stretch of road. There have been many avoidable accidents in the past few years and they will continue until the problems with the level crossing are resolved.

If we can get a more suitable barrier at the level crossing and a lower speed limit along this stretch of the A595 then we can significantly increase the safety of road users and prevent accidents."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
