Farron backs Food and Drink Federation packaging effort

Local MP Tim Farron has today given his backing to the announcement from the Food and Drink Federation to make a 13.5% cut in product packaging by 2010. Mr Farron will table a parliamentary motion in support of the announcement, but also warns that further cuts are needed if the challenge of climate change is to be fully confronted.
Mr Farron also took the opportunity to offer warm congratulations to the Cut Waste in Kendal campaign which is working to make Kendal a plastic bag free zone.
Tim Farron said:
"Excessive packaging is a very real problem, you only have to look at a landfill site for evidence of this. It is really good news that an organisation such as the Food and Drink Federation is making this commitment.
"However, it should be noted that we need to go even further than this, whilst a reduction of 13.5% is better than nothing, it needs to be much bigger. The Cut Waste in Kendal campaign is really blazing a trail in this area with its efforts to make Kendal a plastic bag free town, and I hope other areas follow suit."
