Local MP backs 'Supermarkets Ombudsman' idea

October 31, 2007 3:00 PM

Local MP Tim Farron has backed the Competition Commission's consultation on a 'Supermarkets Ombudsman', which would see an independent body overseeing the conduct of large retailers.

An interim report released today by the Commission claims that some supermarkets are passing undue costs and risk on to suppliers, and at present those suppliers are not encouraged to complain, hence the calls for an ombudsman.

Tim Farron said:

"I have long been concerned about the raw deal British farmers receive at the hands of supermarkets, and this years foot and mouth crisis has only heightened those concerns.

"I am pleased to learn that the Competition Commission is consulting on the possibility of a Supermarkets Ombudsman. I am obviously supportive of this idea, but would suggest we go further and develop a market regulator to proactively prevent market abuse."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
