Lib Dems win crucial boost with Kendal by election victory

March 20, 2008 10:57 AM

Local Liberal Democrats received a huge boost last week after winning the Highgate by-election with a massive 67% share of the vote. The winning candidate, Andy Kaye will now take up his position on the town council. The Conservative candidate was relegated to third place, with only 12% of the vote. This result leaves the Conservatives in South Lakeland in further disarray.

The win, continuing the winning ways for the Liberal Democrats after last year's local election, has been attributed to the excellent track record of working for local communities. Over the past year campaigns against hospital cuts and post office closures have gathered pace, while the Lib Dem District Council has also dramatically increased recycling levels and kept council tax rises down to record low levels after years of huge tax rises when the Conservatives led the Council.

The local MP, Tim Farron said:

"This is a key victory which goes to show the value of keeping in touch with local people all year round - not just when there is an election on! Andy Kaye will be a wonderful representative for people in Kendal - he's a hard worker who is deeply committed to our town, and in particular to providing support and facilities for young people.

"This success gives the Liberal Democrats the perfect boost as we aim to continue our winning momentum in the run up to the local elections in May."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
