Farron rubbishes ridiculous compost charge

November 12, 2008 3:30 PM

Plans announced by the Government which would force schools and charities to pay a registration fee for composting have been labelled as ridiculous by MP Tim Farron.

Mr Farron tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling on the Government to reconsider its decision to levy a £50 composting charge on anything outside of an individual garden.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"This is a preposterous charge that just goes to show that this Government is more preoccupied with introducing needless bureaucratic red tape rather than living up to its environmental commitments.

"Labour have made a lot of noise about their green agenda and have promised to lead by example. But how can they possibly claim to be living up to this promise by forcing schools and charities to pay a charge for their compost heaps?

"Schools play a vital role in teaching children how to look after the environment, but this policy actively discourages them from putting this practice into action.

"In order to successfully protect our environment everyone must contribute. That's why if this Government is serious about putting forward a credible green agenda they must start by scrapping this ridiculous charge."
