Farron Welcomes Water Charge U-Turn

January 26, 2009 7:17 PM

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has described the decision by United Utilities to freeze their customer charges following recent public pressure as a "victory for common sense".

The decision to freeze the charges at the current year's rate was taken after United Utilities agreed not to phase in any more of the charges for these groups until a longer term solution can be agreed with the regulator Ofwat.

The proposals would have seen costs to charity and community organisations rise dramatically, with some larger churches with extensive paved areas or car parks facing charges of up to £5,000. It had been estimated that the implementation of the policy nationwide could cost the Church of England up to £10million.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"I am delighted that United Utilities have seen sense and have changed their mind on what would have been a potentially very damaging decision for our religious and community groups in the South Lakes.

"Small practical steps like this can make a huge difference for community groups struggling to balance their groups. At a time when money is tight, it's important that these organisations are given the financial support needed to keep them afloat."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
