Farron joins launch of new Parliamentary Save the Pub Group

February 4, 2009 5:55 PM

MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron has become a founder member of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group - which will bring together Parliamentarians who want to add their voice to the efforts to preserve and protect the British pub. The group had its inaugural meeting today.

The group will be independent, and will work with all associations, organisations and campaign groups, and also licensees and pub customers, to secure the future of the British pub.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"The closure of pubs up and down the country is a tragedy not only for the communities they serve, but for the nation as pubs are a part of our history and heritage.

"If we are serious about protecting the heritage of British pub, then it is high time we enshrined the pub in law and gave communities a say before they are taken from them.

"It's time the Government started to listen to the voices of licensees and of pub customers as well as the many trade associations who represent particular sections of the trade. The current threat to the Albion at Arnside is further proof that action is needed.

"This new group will address all the issues that are threatening the survival of the industry and we look forward to working with everyone in Britain who genuinely wants to fight for the future of the British pub."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
