Farron launches bid to save wheels-2-work scheme

March 9, 2009 2:21 PM

MP Tim Farron is calling on the North West Development Agency (NWDA) to provide urgent financial support for the 'Wheels2Work' scheme before it is forced to go out of business.

'Wheels2Work' is a scheme which provides scooters for young people who are experiencing difficulty getting to work in rural areas. The initiative was setup in 2006 with funding from the NWDA and has helped many young people in the South Lakes and across the North West into employment.

The scheme's current contract with the NWDA is up at the end of March, with 'Wheels2Work' facing potential closure unless they can find alternative funds. Tim Farron met with youngsters who have been helped by the scheme at a tree planting event before Christmas.

Commenting, Mr Farron said:

"It is often difficult for people, particularly young people, who live in remote rural areas to get to work. Wheels2Work is a fantastic scheme that has made a real difference for many youngsters in South Lakeland looking for employment.

"Without the NWDA's funding, Wheels2Work could find themselves in the position of having to recall the scooters. This would be huge setback for the many youngsters who rely on the scheme to get them to work.

"I am calling on the NWDA to renew their contract with Wheels2Work and give a financial lifeline to a scheme that helps to give young people in rural areas equal life chances."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
