MP wins reprieve for local business in signage battle

April 22, 2009 12:22 PM

Businesses at Yew Tree Barn, Low Newton have received a vital boost after South Lakes MP Tim Farron won the right to keep a sign indicating its location to passing motorists on the Low & High Newton bypass.

After meeting staff at the gallery in February, Mr Farron made representations to the Highways Authority and the RAC, asking for the temporary sign to be allowed to remain throughout the vital summer tourist season while permission was being sought for a permanent marker.

The Yew Tree Barn, which holds numerous local art exhibitions under its 'Made in Cumbria' series, featuring local furniture craftsmen, jewellery makers and photographers, will be able to advertise its presence for six months, until at least September.

Mr Farron said: "Yew Tree Barn is a great example of local entrepreneurship and is a highly valued centre of craftsmanship and creativity. It highlights the work of our skillful local artists and craftsmen and provides both tourists and local residents not only with an insight into the talent of local people but also with freshly made food from the Hat Trick Café.

"I am so glad that we have had this success - but the battle is not over, we need to fight to get permanent signage so that local businesses can thrive."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
