MP intervenes as residents raise concerns over anti-social behaviour around Sedbergh and Cautley

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has taken action after a number of residents expressed concern about the behaviour of a minority of travellers who are settled in the Cautley and Sedbergh areas on their way to the Appleby Horse Fair.
While the majority of travellers are well behaved and respectful, a minority have victimized certain local residents and caused great concern. Mr Farron called together affected residents, council officials and the police at the end of last week, and has since spoken to Cumbria's Chief Constable, Craig Mackey and the Acting Superintendent at Kendal Police Station. Since then, the police presence has improved, but Mr Farron has now called upon all the authorities to learn the lessons of this year.
"After today the travellers will be allowed to enter Eden on their way to the fair, but until that date, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh are disproportionately affected by the influx awaiting entry into Eden. In time for next year, we must ensure that our borders are as effectively policed as Eden's and that court orders are put in place well in advance to prevent the inappropriate occupation of farmers' fields," said Mr Farron who now intends to call together all interested parties to make sure that these precautions are put in place well in advance of next year.
