Lib Dems win historic Euro poll win

June 11, 2009 12:00 AM

Tim Farron MP and local councillors celebrate elections victoryEarlier this week the Liberal Democrats topped the poll in South Lakeland in the European Parliamentary election for the first time in history. The votes in the election were counted and declared district by district. In South Lakeland, the Liberal Democrats won 15,447 votes, which is twice the number of votes they received at the last European elections in 2004. This was the first time that the Liberal Democrats had ever come first in a European poll in South Lakeland - in 2004 the Conservatives had topped the poll by more than 7,000 votes, but have now been pegged back to a poor second.

The European Parliamentary election in the North West saw Liberal Democrat Chris Davies elected.

The results come on the back of excellent results for South Lakeland's Liberal Democrats in the Cumbria County Council elections on June 4th where the party scored almost 60% of the vote, with an enormous 12% swing from the Conservatives. Four County Council seats changed hands, the Liberal Democrats gained three from the Conservatives and one from Labour - all of which were within the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency.

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
