Farron calls on United Utilities to fix sewage leak in Bowness

July 14, 2009 12:00 AM

United Utilities should fix the flooding problem outside Bowness Tourist Information Centre according to South Lakeland MP Tim Farron, who has called on the water company to repair a drain leaking raw sewage outside of the building.

United Utilities are currently working on their Bowness project to create a storage tank and associated pipework to help reduce the amount of sewage ending up in Lake Windermere. The project is being funded by the Environment Agency as part of an EU effort to improve water quality.

The work at the Tourist Information Centre would not be part of the Bowness project however; Mr Farron is encouraging the water company to fix the broken sewer given the proximity of the site.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"Last night I saw with my own eyes the sewage spilling from the drain outside of the Tourist Information Centre and onto the pavement at the front of the building. It's a threat to public health, appallingly anti-social and creates a terrible impression for people walking past.

"It may not fall into United Utilities' project remit to reduce the amount of sewage ending up in Lake Windermere, but it's certainly a problem that needs fixing.

"I'm hopeful that United Utilities will appreciate that it makes sense for them to fix the drain as they're going to be working just a couple of hundred yards away and that we can get this problem sorted."
