Farron launches petition for national carers card

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron today launched his petition for the introduction of a national carers' card that would allow carers to go free to an event to support a disabled person.
Many disabled people who require carers' assistance when going to events and activities are being forced to purchase an additional ticket for their carer. This effectively discriminates against carers by restricting their ability to access certain services.
Mr Farron believes that the introduction of a universal carers card would ensure that disabled people are able to access services without discrimination. Tim will be sending out his petition to local disabled groups such as South Lakeland Society for the Blind to gain signatures before presenting it to Parliament later on in this year.
Commenting Mr Farron said:
"It's hugely unfair that disabled people are being forced to pay extra for their carer at events and other activities.
"People with disabilities shouldn't be prevented from going to events simply because they can't afford to pay for their carer to come with them. They have every right to be frustrated and angry by such obvious discrimination.
"The government has a responsibility to support people with disabilities. This should include helping them with the additional costs of having a carer.
"I'll be sending my petition calling for the introduction of a universal national carers card to all the local disability groups in South Lakeland. I'm hopefully that with enough support, the government will listen to our campaign."
