Farron praises South Lakeland dairy farmers for "going green"

August 14, 2009 3:06 PM

Tim at a dairy farm in Burton-in-KendalSouth Lakeland MP Tim has praised the efforts of local dairy farmers for going 'green' in order to reduce the industry's impact on the environment.

Dairy processors, farmers and retailers within the UK have developed a 'roadmap' of environmental improvements with the government. The report, the "Milk Roadmap: One year down the road" shows that despite experiencing a tough year, dairy farmers have excelled against the green targets.

Dairy Farmers in South Lakeland are on course to meet or beat most of the targets ahead of the first milestones in 2010, with 45% of farmers involved in the environmental stewardship scheme and almost 50% of farmers actively using a nutrient management plan.

Mr Farron has praised the response from local farmers to the Milk Roadmap, which he believes allows farmers meet their environmental responsibilities without compromising productivity.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"I'm delighted that the Milk Roadmap has reflected the significant strides dairy farmers in South Lakeland have made in reducing the industry's impact on the environment.

"Its clear that the Roadmap has struck the right balance between allowing farmers to meet 'green targets' without it damaging their productivity or profitability.

"Despite another tough year for the industry, South Lakeland's dairy farmers have shown what can be done in a short time, and have set a clear benchmark for other food businesses to follow."
