Farron calls on the NWDA to reject University Of Cumbria's business plan unless they commit to keeping all students at Ambleside

February 26, 2010 12:00 AM

Local MP Tim Farron has called on the North West Development Agency not to accept the revised University of Cumbria's business plan which contains within it the moving of teaching students from Ambleside to Lancaster & Carlisle.

Tim has been leading the campaign to save the campus and recently won concessions from the university management. The concessions have allowed all Outdoor Studies students to stay in Ambleside.

The decision to move teaching students was decided at the Board of Governors meeting at the beginning of February. But because of the severe financial situation, the university has to go back to the North West Development Agency to get their agreement on their decisions. The agency is major financial supporter of the university and has stepped in to offer millions of pounds to deal with the estates backlog on their campuses.

Tim said: "We've been working hard with the North West Development Agency and Kendal College to present a rescue package to keep all the students at Ambleside. Their support has been tremendous and I thank them for that. I am now calling on the agency to stand up to the university and demand that they keep all the students in the South Lakes. The community in Ambleside has actively campaigned to keep the students here. T he NWDA are now the key body that can help us to do that."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
