MP praises local council as they announce plastic recycling pilot

April 1, 2010 12:00 AM

MP Tim Farron has hailed the decision of South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) to offer a pilot scheme for plastic recycling in our area.

Each home in the South Lakes generates around a tonne of waste each year. This equates to 12,000 newspapers, 7,800,000 glass bottles and 15,000,000 cans. Currently over 50% of household waste is recycled and since 2006 the council has become one of the 'greenest' authorities in Britain.

Tim has led calls for doorstep collections of plastic and cardboard to be introduced locally and is delighted with the council's announcement.

Tim said: "Plastic waste harms the environment and can endanger wildlife due to the length of time it takes to decompose. So I am delighted that SLDC have announced this pilot today and I hope that the scheme will be rolled out all over the South Lakes as soon as possible. This pilot scheme shows our community's commitment to green issues and the environment even in these tough economic times."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
