University must put Cumbria first to escape financial crisis as vice chancellor leaves post - Farron

May 19, 2010 12:00 AM

Commenting on the news this morning that University of Cumbria vice chancellor Peter McCaffery is leaving the university with immediate effect, local MP Tim Farron said:

"Peter McCaffery inherited the mess at the university, he didn't create it, and regardless of our differences he has done much to try and get the university onto a sound financial footing. I wish him all the best in the future.

"The new management at the university must now work to escape the financial crisis - but they must work smartly making the best use of their assets and ensuring that local communities in the Lake District get the best deal from their university.

"Just this morning, commenting on the university's business plan, I said that I was left none the wiser about their long term plans for the historic Charlotte Mason site in Ambleside. Meanwhile there is to be additional investment at the University's Lancaster campus - but if the University is to succeed it must put Cumbria first and invest in its Cumbrian campuses including Ambleside."

If you are a resident of the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
