MP commemorates anniversary of the Battle of the Somme

Local MP Tim Farron submitted an Early Day Motion yesterday to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The EDM also recognises and acknowledges the vital work of the Royal British Legion today in supporting ex-service men and women. The EDM has already attracted signatures from cross-party MPs.

The full text of the EDM reads:

"That this House commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 and remembers the 420,000 casualties suffered by the British Army during the battle, which lasted until 18th November; praises the Royal British Legion for their continuing work to raise funds to support ex-service men and women, with events including a four day cycle ride from 14th to 18th June to the key locations of the battle; and recognises the vital importance of this work in helping to ensure the sacrifice, efforts and the interest of past and present service personnel will never be forgotten".

Tim commented: "It is important for us to remember this battle, remember those who fought and those who sacrificed their lives for our country. It is also important to praise the work of the Royal British Legion today which offers support and advice to ex-service men and women. I hope that all MPs will see their way to signing this EDM to pay tribute to current and past service men and women".
