MP astonished at lack of consultation over post office plans

2.08.56pm GMT Thu 15th Feb 2007

Local Post Offices are not even being consulted on government plans to slash the number of Post Offices in the country - that's the shocking news from MP Tim Farron's latest Post Office Forum meeting.

As the meeting got underway, Tim was astonished to hear that not one of the sub post-masters had received a copy of the Department of Trade and Industry's Post Office Consultation document.

Tim said:

"I couldn't believe that the document that might decide the future of our local post offices had not been distributed to sub post-masters. This is yet another case of the government 'consulting' but not listening.

"The meeting itself was very useful, and a summary of the consultation document was distributed at the forum. I will also be sending a copy of the consultation document to all parish councils and post offices.

Tim's petition against post office closures is also going from strength to strength, with thousands of signatures already collected, and numerous requests received from post offices for more petition forms.
