"Sports clubs tax rebate should fly away!" - Farron

3.00.00pm GMT Wed 12th Dec 2007

Local MP Tim Farron is today writing to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, to urge him to reconsider the recent change in tax rules, which have decreed that Pigeon Racing is not a sport, and thus not eligible for a tax rebate.

Tim Farron said:

"It is ridiculous that pigeon racing could be seriously damaged by petty minded bureaucrats who have not got the first idea about the sport or its part in our society. Pigeon Racing has been a sport for over 200 years, and this decision by the Treasury shows a complete disdain for this heritage.

"In addition, it is completely unfair that Pigeon Fanciers are treated in this manner when many pastimes retain their rebate. It is imperative that this decision is reversed as soon as possible, so that Pigeon Fanciers can enjoy the support that they deserve."
