MP calls on Culture Secretary to step in to save local arts and culture

3.00.00pm GMT Wed 19th Dec 2007

Local MP Tim Farron has today expressed concern at the decision of Northern Rock Foundation to cut millions of pounds for cultural and creative sectors next year. Mr Farron has tabled a parliamentary question to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport asking for their assessment of the cuts, and hopes to establish what exactly is being done to limit the impact of the reduction in funding.

Tim has also tabled a parliamentary motion expressing concern at the potential impact of the cuts, and will be meeting with representatives of local arts and heritage bodies in early January.

Tim Farron said:

?This will come as a huge blow to those theatres and other cultural institutions who rely on donations to survive. There are huge benefits to maintaining the cultural sector in our area, and I will be pressing the Government on their proposals to reduce the impact of the cuts.?
