Farron criticises Stagecoach fare rise

3.00.00pm GMT Wed 16th Jan 2008

Local MP Tim Farron has today criticised bus firm Stagecoach for the 7.5% rise in the cost of travelling in South Cumbria, this will be the third time in four years that the fares have risen. The rise, which is significantly more than the rate of inflation has been attributed to a rise in fuel prices.

Mr Farron has tabled a question to the Secretary of State for Transport asking what rise, if any, that similar local authorities around the country have seen.

Tim Farron said:

"A rise that is some 5% above inflation is frankly over the top. At a time when we are trying to encourage people to get out of their cars and into public transport, a rise in the cost of public transport is the last thing we want to see.

"Stagecoach are able to dictate the prices in our area because of a lack of competition in this sector. I want to see the Government look into giving local authorities the power to regulate in this kind of situation."
