Lib Dem Countryside Spokesman Hails NFU Centenary

3.00.00pm GMT Mon 4th Feb 2008

Tim Farron MP, the Liberal Democrat Spokesman for the Countryside, has hailed the work of the NFU in light of their upcoming centenary. For one hundred years the National Farmers Union has provided a voice for farmers, and has only seen its relevance increase in recent years, with issues such as bluetongue and foot and mouth proving the need to give farmers a voice.

Tim Farron said:

"It is absolutely right that we celebrate the work of the NFU alongside the importance of farming. Farming is integral to both the rural economy and the environmental health of the countryside, through helping maintain biodiversity and ensure the preservation of our outstanding landscapes, and so it is important that farmers are given a political voice to defend their way of life and to protect their interests."

"I have posted an Early Day Motion on this subject to give Members of Parliament the chance to recognise the importance of the NFU and to celebrate its work on behalf of farmers and growers in particular, and rural Britain in general.
