MP calls for action as High and Low Newton businesses struggle without signage due to new bypass

The A590 bypass at Low and High Newton has now been open for a month, and already local businesses are struggling as thousands of tourists each day by pass them unawares. Local MP Tim Farron has today called on the County Council and reiterated calls to the Highways Agency and Transport Ministers to provide signage from the by-pass so that visitors can be made aware of the presence of local businesses.

So far, there has been a flat refusal to consider this by central government, so Tim is now pursuing the County Council to see if they will provide a sign. Mr Farron is urging residents of High and Low Newton to support their local businesses by writing to the Chief Executive of Cumbria County Council in support of signage.

Tim Farron said:

"The new A590 bypass at Low and High Newton was supported by most local people, bringing much-needed tranquillity to villages following years of dangerous and noisy traffic running through the community. However, it has also had the unwanted side-affect of removing the passing trade from local businesses.

"It is imperative that something is done to help these outstanding local businesses get the trade they deserve - businesses such as the Yew Tree Barn craft centre and cafe, and the Crown Inn, which if properly signposted could get a great boost in trade, providing a much welcome boost to the local economy."
