Farron asks Post Office chiefs to step in to save Burneside

3.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 17th Jun 2008

Local MP Tim Farron has written to the Chief Executive of Post Office Limited, Alan Cook today to ask that he steps in to find an alternative and permanent location for Burneside post office after the branch was closed this weekend. The branch was not closed as part of the Government's closure plan and had been earmarked for retention.

Mr Farron is concerned that , as many of the regular customers are elderly and have little access to public transport, the loss of the branch will have a very serious impact.

Tim Farron said:

"Burneside Post Office is a vital and busy service for villagers and for a large rural area to the north of Kendal. The most vulnerable people in the community are likely to be those who suffer the most if a solution to this problem is not found.

"Post Office Limited had not selected this branch for closure, so they obviously recognise the value of Burneside post office. I have written to the Chief Executive in order that a new location is found as soon as possible."
