    South Lakes MP Tim Farron has accused the Government of betraying local people by rejecting flood defence plans for Windermere lake after new figures showed that almost 100 businesses were flooded back in 2015.

    In answer to a Written Parliamentary Question from Tim, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said that 94 businesses around the lake had been flooded two years ago.

    Local Liberal Democrat councillor Hazel Hodgson will lead a protest march this Friday (21st) against plans for a power station in Old Hutton.

    Plans were rejected by South Lakeland District Council back in January, but modified plans have been submitted by the developer.

    The march starts at 3.30pm at Old Hutton Primary School and will see the protestors walk down to the proposed site and back up to the school field.

    Local MP Tim Farron has criticised the Government's "perverse" funding scheme which is leading to schools not being able to afford to take on children with special needs.

    Speaking at the NAHT Cumbria Education Summit in Penrith today, Tim said that the policy of schools having to pay for the first 11 hours of support for children with learning disabilities meant that the Government had made it too expensive for local schools to take children with learning disabilities.

    Local MP Tim Farron has hit out at the Government's new agriculture bill which announces a seven-year phasing out of direct payments for farmers.

    At yesterday's Westmorland County Show, Tim met with representatives from the National Farmers' Union and the CLA, all of whom had major concerns about the bill's commitment to phasing out direct payments - payments which they say are lifelines for many farmers in the county.

    At the Westmorland County Show yesterday, South Lakes MP Tim Farron launched a petition to tackle the effect excessive second home ownership is having on local communities.

    The petition calls on the Government to allow local authorities to increase council tax on second homes which would raise extra money to fund key local services which are at risk in communities where many of the homes are not lived in all year round.
