    Local Liberal Democrat Police and Crime Commissioner candidate Loraine Birchall is calling for a return to proper community policing, after it was revealed that two in every three burglary cases in Cumbria went unsolved last year.

    New analysis by the Liberal Democrats reveals that 8,966 crimes reported to Cumbria police from October 2019 to September 2020 were closed without a suspect being identified - including 1,250 burglaries, 112 car thefts and 24 robberies.

    Local MP Tim Farron says NHS front line staff desperately need more support, after it was revealed that 4.7 million people were waiting for routine operations and procedures in England in February - the most since 2007.

    Today's figures from NHS England show that there are 24,002 people in the Morecambe Bay area waiting to start hospital treatment, up from 19,867 this time last year.

    South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the Government's pledge to scrap a pre-Victorian law which makes it a criminal offence to beg or be homeless on the street in England and Wales.

    The Vagrancy Act, which was passed by Parliament back in 1824, can lead to people being fined £1,000 and given a criminal record for sleeping on the streets.

    South Lakes MP Tim Farron has written to the Chief Executive of Leonard Cheshire, Ruth Owen, formally asking her to put on hold plans to close Holehird care home in Windermere.

    Ahead of a Leonard Cheshire board meeting tomorrow, Tim has asked for the charity to suspend the process of making staff redundant and closing the home, in order to explore other options to save Holehird, including finding a new provider to take over the running of the home.

    Liberal Democrat candidate for Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner Loraine Birchall is calling on the Government to make dog theft a specific criminal offence to combat the worrying rise during the pandemic.

    DogLost, a charity that helps reunite owners with their lost dogs, saw reported pet thefts soar from 172 dogs in 2019 to 465 in 2020.
