Local MP Tim Farron met today with Peter Phillips from the Ofcom Executive Committee about proposals from ITV to cease transmission from Border Television, and replace it with programming from Tyne-Tees Television, based in Newcastle.
Mr Farron was joined by other MPs from the region and succeeded in getting a commitment from Ofcom that they would visit the region to see first hand its unique nature.
Tim Farron said:
"It is important that we get the chance to press the case for retaining Border TV with Ofcom representatives at the highest level.
"If our local news is replaced by a news programme from the north east then our local communities are bound to be ignored. Border is extremely popular, some of the news programmes are the most watched news broadcasts in the entire country, showing that Border is extremely successful at engaging with the audience. I will be urging Mr Phillips to maintain transmissions from Border TV."
