Tim collecting signatures for the cancer unit campaignLocal MP Tim Farron has taken the next step in his radiotherapy campaign, by taking it to the bird cage in Kendal's town centre.

Tim Farron started by sending 40,000 petitions to South Lakes' residents in September, asking them to support his bid to bring a radiotherapy unit to the Westmorland General Hospital. Last month, he launched the online petition on his website, meaning anyone, anywhere and at any time could sign the petition.

The campaign was launched after the huge success in bringing the chemotherapy unit to the hospital. If radiotherapy services were provided in Kendal, it would save patients from a 44 mile trip toPreston.

Tim is now hoping to often be present at the bird cage in Kendal, and at village markets and town centres around theSouthLakes, chatting to local residents and urging them of the importance of supporting the campaign.

Commenting, Tim said: "We are delighted with the establishment of the chemotherapy unit at Westmorland General and the response I've seen from patients is evidence of its success, however our campaign for new health services must not stop here.

''I hope that residents respond with the same passion to stage 2 of our campaign, as they did regarding the petition for the chemotherapy services, by supporting and signing the new petition for a radiotherapy unit in Kendal."
