Local MP Tim Farron will join the celebrations this Thursday as the Olympic torch makes its way through the South Lakes. Tim is hailing the celebrations as a tribute to the work of council Leader Brendan Jameson, who died in March and who worked so hard to ensure that South Lakes got not just one but five torch stops. The torch is to arrive in Grasmere at 5.30pm and will travel to Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere before continuing its journey through Kendal and Milnthorpe on Friday.
Farron will meet the torch as it arrives in Grasmere following an Olympic Torch Celebration in Broadgate meadow. School children in Grasmere will take part in a sports day before joining with local residents for a traditional afternoon tea party. The celebrations will feature music and dance performances from local community groups.
Local torch-bearers who will carry the flame for the South Lakes include 14-year-old Finn Miles, who aims to be an inspiration for fellow sufferers of Asperger's Syndrome; 49-year-old top judo coach Mike Liptrot who helped to secure official pre-Olympic training camp status for Kendal Judo Club; and 64-year-old David Ratcliffe, who hopes to inspire runners of all ages and abilities.
Commenting, Tim said: "I am very excited about welcoming the Olympic torch to the South Lakes and I'm delighted to be kicking off the festivities with school children from Grasmere. These Olympics are all about inspiring a younger generation to the joys and benefits of sport and I know this day will be very memorable for all involved.
"It is difficult not to think of Brendan as we prepare to celebrate an event which he was looking forward to so much. But as the eyes of the world will be on the South Lakes this will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the fantastic surroundings and community spirit for which Brendan work so hard for so many years and I know he would be incredibly proud. I hope as many people as possible will join us for what is promising to be the celebration of a generation!"
