South Lakes MP Tim Farron has demanded urgent action be taken on the A684 Kendal to Sedbergh road at Lily Mere near Killington.
Since the road was resurfaced in the summer, there have been numerous accidents in wet weather, and dozens of constituents have also contacted Tim after near misses. Following another accident this morning, one constituent described it as 'feeling like they were driving on black ice'.
Tim first contacted Cumbria Highways expressing his concern and asking them to take action on 16 September, and has written a number of times since. After further accidents, and more letters from constituents, he wrote to the county council's chief executive on 9 October. To date, the council have not replied.
Speaking this afternoon, Tim said: "It's clear that something has happened after this road was resurfaced. Those people having accidents, or near misses, are locals who drive from Kendal to Sedbergh every day and know the road. But more and more people are reporting that it's really slippy after rain - much more so than it used to be.
"We've been lucky so far in that the accidents have generally been at low speed, and not serious. But something must be done urgently before a serious accident occurs.
"At the very least I'd imagine an immediate speed restriction during wet weather needs to be brought in, but the council really do need to get to the root of the problem quickly - even if that means resurfacing the road again."
