July 3, 2014 4:26 PM

TF KendalOn the eve of 'Independents Day', created to support small businesses, South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on local residents to back our high streets.

Independents' Day is a national campaign which aims to give a voice to the UK's independent retailers. On July 4 and 5 independent businesses are offering discounts and great offers as part of the event.

On 4 July, a selection of Kendal's independent traders will be out in force in the market place to show off the range of goods, products and services on offer in the town centre. On Saturday the 5th the Westmorland Gazette are also working with the retailers and offering exclusive special offers and re-usable hessian bags.

Tim said: "Independents' Day is a great opportunity to show the value of independent shops to our community and encourage footfall to local shops."
