South Lakes MP Tim Farron is welcoming action being taken by the Government to call on off-grid energy companies to cut prices.S South Lakes MP Tim Farron is backing a campaign encouraging heating oil users to stock up early before winter sets in.

Tim has previously called on the government to ensure that off-gas grid households, and particularly vulnerable people, are supported this winter.

Last week, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander MP convened a summit of representatives of suppliers of off grid oil and gas and representatives of consumer groups to tell them to cut their prices. Mr Alexander has said that he wants to put pressure on heating oil suppliers to ensure that cuts in the oil price would be passed on customers.

An estimated 1.5 million households in the UK rely on oil. Tim has also urged local people to get together to create heating oil cooperatives to buy in bulk to lower the cost.

Commenting, Tim said: "Many households in the Cumbria are off-grid and the cost of heating oil and LPG can be a concern for many families, particularly now that winter is upon us.

"I have previously highlighted the need for the Government to ensure that off-grid households are supported and I welcome Danny Alexander's efforts to urge suppliers to pass on savings on the cost of oil to customers.

"Any reduction in heating oil prices will help off-grid households in Cumbria stay warm this winter."
