Sri Lankan elections and the election of Maithripala Sirisena

January 9, 2015 4:16 PM

Tim in WestminsterLiberal Democrat Foreign and Commonwealth Spokesperson Tim Farron MP has today commented on the Presidential election results in Sri Lanka and the election of Maithripala Sirisena.

Tim said: "I hope the election of Maithripala Sirisena offers the start of a new era in Sri Lankan-UK relations. I hope that the new Government will focus on improving relations with the Tamil community, tackling corruption and restoring relations with the West.

"We should also welcome the news that President Rajapaksa has recognised the will of the Sri Lankan people and conceded defeat. In too many countries, peaceful transitions of power are still unable to take place."
