Tim Farron has welcomed the news that South Lakeland leads in Cumbria for new company formations.
Statistics, compiled by www.informdirect.co.uk, have revealed that there were 538 new companies formed in South Lakeland followed by 505 in Allerdale, 477 in Carlisle and 385 in Barrow-in-Furness.
There are 5.4% more active companies than there were a year ago and 26.1% more than five years ago.
Tim said: "These figures prove that local people are bucking the national trend. It is brilliant to see so many entrepreneurs and business people in the South Lakes setting up their own business. This is something we should be incredibly proud of.
"Our community is making its own luck and proving that there is still a huge amount of vitality and strength in our local economy."
