Public Backs Farron's Flood Defence Campaign

March 25, 2016 11:45 AM

Flood Defence Scheme campaignSouth Lakeland MP Tim Farron has been collecting signatures in Kendal to support his campaign for the government to fully fund a £25million flood defence scheme for Kendal, Burneside and Staveley.

It is expected that Cumbria as a whole will receive £58million of a total of £700million of funding for flood defences which was announced in the budget. However, the government has yet to commit to fully funding a scheme for Kendal.

Tim is pushing for the government to commit to fully a £25million scheme drawn up by the Environment Agency, which would protect Kendal, Burneside and Staveley. The scheme would involve a multi-faceted, whole-systems approach.

Tim said: "It is not surprising that local people here in Kendal are almost unanimously in favour of this scheme - people here have lived through and witnessed the terrible damage caused by the floods.

"The government must provide the funding needed for this scheme. Local residents and businesses have been devastated by the flooding, and this scheme would help to protect them in the future.

"Funding this scheme is an investment which will more than pay for itself in the future by protecting homes and businesses, as well as helping to avoid the human misery which the floods caused."
