South Lakes MP Tim Farron has written to the Brexit Secretary David Davis, asking for farmers to be granted a special deal with full access to the EU's Single Market.
Earlier in the week Tim met with the National Union of Farmer's Regional Director for the North West, David Hall, to discuss the problems facing local farmers.
At the moment, around 90% of beef and lamb exports go to countries in the European Union.
Tim said:"This is a critical time for the British farming industry.
"At the same time as potentially cutting important subsidies, the government are threatening to walk away from the EU without a deal, which would see farmers faced with paying 50% tariffs on exports.
"It is absolutely vital that the farming sector be given a special deal with full access to the Single Market or we could well see the end of family farming here in South Cumbria and across the rest of the country."
