Tim FarronThis afternoon, Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has launched a petition, calling on the Royal Mail to allow people to send cards and parcels to their loved ones in care homes for free for the rest of the year.
Last month, Tim wrote to Royal Mail asking them to follow the lead of the Irish postal company An Post who have announced they will carry letters, large envelopes, packets and parcels up to 2kg addressed to residents in nursing and care homes for free until January 31.
In a letter back from Royal Mail, the company's Director of Public Affairs and Policy David Gold said: "There is no question that mail is especially important at Christmas. Letters and cards are a key part of the Christmas season.
"This year we anticipate that they will be even more important, especially to those among us who are unable to be with their loved ones.
"We noted with interest the An Post initiative, and we will be looking at it in more detail."
Tim said: "One of the saddest things during the crisis has been the way that people who live in care homes have been cut off from many forms of communication and contact.
"Letters and parcels from loved ones delivered via the Royal Mail has been a God send during this time but with us now in another lockdown we need to do more to keep that vital contact.
"I'm really glad that the Royal Mail say they are seriously looking into this proposal of free post to care homes for the rest of the year.
"Please help us persuade them that this would be the right thing to do for people in care homes and their loved ones by signing our petition today."
